What unlimited means here
On an Inovo eSIM unlimited plan, unlimited means there is no cap on the total volume of data you can move over the life of the plan, and you will never be cut off or charged extra for using too much. What is limited is the speed, once you pass the daily allowance.
How the daily allowance works
- The allowance
- Each unlimited plan has a daily full speed allowance, shown on the plan page before you buy and again on the plan detail screen afterwards. It varies by destination because it is set by the underlying carrier, not by us.
- When you pass it
- Your connection keeps working. It is reduced to a slower speed for the remainder of that day. You are not disconnected, not charged more, and not asked to buy anything.
- When it resets
- At the start of the next day, full speed returns automatically. The reset follows the carrier's clock, usually midnight UTC or local network time, so it may not match midnight where you are standing.
- What reduced speed feels like
- Messaging, email, maps and most web browsing continue to work. High definition video streaming, large downloads and video calls will struggle or fail. Treat reduced speed as enough to function, not enough to stream.
The exact reduced speed is set by the carrier and is not something we can quote reliably or guarantee, so we do not publish a number we cannot stand behind.
Fixed data plans are different
This policy applies only to plans described as unlimited. A fixed plan, such as 10 GB for 30 days, is exactly what it says: full speed throughout, no throttling, and the plan simply ends when the allowance is used or the validity expires.
If you would rather have predictable speed than predictable volume, buy a fixed plan. If you would rather never be cut off, buy an unlimited plan. Neither is better, and the app shows both side by side so you can choose.
Fair use limits on unlimited plans
Unlimited plans are for one traveller using one device. Because the cost of an unlimited plan is not tied to volume, they attract the kind of use that gets wholesale routes shut down, so a small number of extra rules apply.
- Tethering may be limited or unavailable on some unlimited plans. Where it is restricted, the plan page says so.
- Sustained automated traffic, such as running a server, seeding torrents or mining, is not permitted on any plan and is specifically incompatible with unlimited pricing.
- Using an unlimited plan as a permanent home or office connection is not permitted. These are travel plans.
- Everything in the Acceptable Use Policy applies here as well.
Prohibited conduct is listed in full in the Acceptable Use Policy. Read the Acceptable Use Policy.
Where use breaches these limits we may restrict the connection or suspend the plan, as described in that policy. We do not throttle you further, quietly, for merely using a lot of data within the rules. If you stay inside the daily allowance you get full speed, every day, however much that adds up to.
When allowances change
Carriers occasionally change the daily allowance on a wholesale product. Where that happens, the change applies to plans bought after the change, and the plan page always shows the allowance that applies to what you are about to buy.
If a carrier reduces the allowance on a plan you have already bought and activated, and the reduction is material, contact esim@innovage.io. That is a case where we will look at it properly.
